Safety Glasses: Z87.1, Lens Tints and Anti-Fog

Eye protection is the cheapest PPE on the truck and the most commonly skipped. Fit and fog are what decide whether people keep it on.

Look for the Z87+ marking for high-impact protection under ANSI/ISEA Z87.1, then choose the lens tint for the light conditions and an anti-fog coating for any humid, hot or physical work.

Read the markings

ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 marks are stamped on the frame and lens. Z87 is basic impact, Z87+ is high impact, D3 is splash/droplet, D4 is dust, D5 is fine dust, W plus a number is a welding shade, U is UV and R is infrared.

Tint by light condition

Match tint to where the work happens.

  • Clear: indoor and night work
  • Gray / smoke: bright outdoor sun
  • Amber / vermillion: low light, overcast, dawn and dusk
  • Indoor/outdoor mirror: crews moving in and out all shift
  • Polarized: glare off water, glass, sheet metal and wet pavement

Fog is the real failure mode

Most eye-protection non-compliance is fogging, not defiance. Permanent anti-fog coatings, vented frames and foam-gasket frames each solve a different version of it; hot, humid and respirator-paired work needs the strongest anti-fog available.

Glasses, goggles or face shield

Glasses handle flying particles. Sealed goggles are required for dust, splash and chemical work. A face shield is always secondary protection — it is worn over glasses or goggles, never instead of them.

Buying for a crew

Stock two or three frames people actually like plus a bulk box of clear spares. Cheap spares in the gang box beat perfect glasses back at the shop.

Common questions

What does Z87+ mean on safety glasses?
Z87+ means the eyewear passed the high-impact test in ANSI/ISEA Z87.1. Plain Z87 marking indicates basic impact protection only.
Do I need goggles instead of safety glasses?
Yes for dust, chemical splash and liquid droplet hazards — those require sealed goggles marked D3, D4 or D5. Safety glasses cover flying-particle impact hazards.
Does a face shield replace safety glasses?
No. Face shields are secondary protection and must be worn over safety glasses or goggles.
